Initial Devlog

Introduction

Hi everyone, This will be my very first devlog in what I hope to be a long journey. I'm Hojobo, a first-time game developer. I have very basic programming and game design skills, but I hope to learn much as I embark on this.

So, let me introduce my project. I am working on a warehouse management game. I'm still working on deciding the balance between Arcadey and Simmy. It will be similar to a game like PlateUp! But a little longer-form and based on bigger-picture ideas. (This is not set in stone and will likely pivot as development continues). The current working name is Dash Manager, but again, this may change as development continues.

Current Goals

I am currently working on getting the basic flow of the game and its integral mechanics in place. The game will flow like this:

The product comes in > Player Receives Product > Player Stocks Product to locations > Orders come in > Player picks items for order > Player Packages Order > Order is sent out.

It won't always flow in this order as well. There may be a rush of orders while trying to receive new products, or you may get a delivery of frozen goods that need to be put into a freezer ASAP, and the player will stop doing orders to deal with that.

Other mechanics, such as cleaning, sorting, auditing, etc., will help maintain the warehouse's flow and efficiency.

What I've Finished So Far

I will restate that this is my first serious foray into a project like this. I have practically no experience making a game, so I'm not sure what's important or significant to put here.

But here are the main things I've finished(ish):

  • Player movement
  • Camera perspective
  • Basic item interaction framework
  • Receiving area
    • This is the area where your new product will appear. I have a functional system to spawn new pallets on a timer or through other means (item interaction, specific triggers, etc.)
    • I also have a simple system that allows the player to "receive" the product on the pallet and make the pallet disappear.

Conclusion

Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and feel free to leave any tips or comments for me! I am looking forward to this journey and hope to learn a lot. :)
